It thrives in sandy, alkaline soil conditions and may also grow in rocky conditions, making it an ideal plants for landscaping in poor soil conditions. The prickly pear is also tolerant of drought and frost. Although the prickly pear is commonly associated with desert climates, there are also 19 species that grow east of the Mississippi, according to the University of Florida Cooperative Extension. Soil Requirements Prickly pears require well-drained soil conditions and do well in planting sites that contain sand and rocks. They aren't picky about many things, except for waterlogged soil conditions. If your soil has a high clay content, increase drainage by incorporating organic matter. For optimal soil drainage, plant prickly-pear cacti in soil with a large amount of sand and rock. These materials are less compact and allow water to drain easily. You can also purchase cactus soil mixtures at home and garden stores. Watering Frequency Watering your cacti too frequently causes waterlogged conditions and may even result in root rot, a disease that can be kill the cacti. Young prickly-pear cacti need to be watered only once every two to three weeks during the hot and dry summer months. Once they are established, the cacti can usually survive off of rainwater, although specific watering requirements vary based on the cactus species and the amount of rainfall they receive during the cooler months. Considerations It's normal for the pads of the prickly pear to dry out before winter due to water loss, according to Fine Gardening. When handling the prickly pear, keep in mind that the bristles can cause serious skin irritation. Always use tongs to handle the pads. If you want to make your own soil mixture for prickly-pear cacti, combine 50 percent builder's sand, 25 percent loam soil and 25 percent organic matter to provide drainage as well as adequate nutrient levels.
