Vintage 1978 Schwinn Approved Bike Rider Battery Operated Safety Light Part No. 05816

Vintage 1978 Schwinn Approved Bike Rider Safety Light Part No. 05 816 made in Taiwan. This item is new old stock and was never removed from its factory package. Handheld battery operated safety light with red and clear lens. Battery not included. Very rare part and might be one of its kind. Sometime in the 1970's, the Schwinn Chicago factory was organized by the United Auto Workers union, who felt that the part factory workers should be paid on the same scale as automotive workers. Unfortunately, the realities of the marketplace didn't agree, and Schwinn closed the factory, transferring most production to Japan (Panasonic) and Taiwan (Giant). Schwinn also built a factory in Greenville, Mississippi, but it didn't last, and even bought a factory in Hungary, but the deal fell through, and Schwinn never imported any parts to the U.S. They also manufactured their own parts that say "Schwinn" were made by Schwinn in their enormous Chicago factory and parts that say "Schwinn Approved" were made in Taiwan to Schwinn's specifications.
