Reynolds Tobacco Company Metal Camel Display with excellent graphics. 8 shelves to display cigarettes and lighters. Advertising on both sides of the display. HISTORY: The R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company (abbreviated RJR), is an American tobacco manufacturing company based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and headquartered at the RJR Plaza Building. Founded by R. J. Reynolds in 1875, it is the second-largest tobacco company in the U.S. (behind Altria). Nowadays the company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Reynolds American Inc., after merging with the U.S. operations of British American Tobacco in 2004. RJR has a long brand portfolio which includes Camel, Newport, Doral, Eclipse, Kent and Pall Mall. Other brands commercialized in the past were Barclay, Belair, and Rea More History: When the R. J. Reynolds (PJR)s marketing team was seeking an idea to use to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Camel cigarettes, they turned to the companys archives. Nicholas Price, a British artist, created Joe Camel in 1973 as part of a French advertising campaign that ran in several European countries. Price was inspired by Old Joe, the camel, which appeared on packs of Camel cigarettes since 1918. Joe Camel made his American appearance in 1988 on 75th-anniversary material prepared by Tron Advertising based in Greensboro, North Carolina. The campaigns theme was the Smooth Character. Joe Camel was portrayed as a muscular humanoid with a camels head. His feet always were covered with footwear that matched his outfit. There was no hump or tail, his head never changed, and his hands appeared only occasionally. Joe Camel became an icon that refueled the moral outrage of the anti-smoking movement. In a 1991 article in the Journal of the American Medical Association, it asserted that children above the age of six identified Joe Camel with cigarettes in the same percentage as identifying Mickey Mouse with Disney. R. J. Reynolds denied the campaign was targeting underage buyers. Another study revealed that 32 percent of cigarettes sold to underage buyers were Camels. R. J. Reynolds refused to end the campaign. R. J. Reynolds claimed the Joe Camel campaign was targeted at the 25-49 age group and Marlboro smokers. Reynolds launched a Lets Clear the Air on Smoking campaign. In Magnini vs. R. J. Reynolds, a 1974 Memo was introduced in evidence that clearly stated that Reynolds was targeting the 14-24 age group. In July 1997, R. J. Reynolds voluntarily ended its Joe Camel campaign. A new campaign introduced a plain image of a quadrupedal, non-anthropomorphic camel
