The Seamen's Bank For Savings was a U.S. bank that served people in the maritime industry, especially seamen and their families. It was founded in 1829 in New York City and operated until 1990, when it was seized by the U.S. Government for being insolvent and its assets were sold to Chase bank.
This Navy Sailor Ceramic Bank was a promotional item given out by The Seamen's Bank for Savings, primarily in New York City, to encourage sailors to open savings accounts. Frank Goss designed these, and they were produced by McCoy Pottery, a well renowned ceramics company. The sailor depicted is sometimes referred to as "The Jolly Sailor," carrying a sea bag, presumably filled with saving$. These ceramic coin banks are typically from the 1940s (possibly into the 1950s), a product of and relating to the WWIl era.
My father was in in the Navy during WWII, and unbeknownst to him, the wartime ship he was on surprisingly had made its way to his hometown of NYC, where he took liberty (Limited time off on dry land). He opened a bank account at The Seaman's Bank for Saving in Manhattan and received this Sailor Coin Bank, which he loaned to his little brother upon his surprise visit home to his overjoyed parents. My uncle, a child at the time, used this bank to save his pennies to contribute to U.S. wartime campaigns. Years later, this bank was returned to my father, and he placed this ceramic figurine on a shelf in his closet for several years, where no one touched it, (though it was routinely admired). He then relocated it to a special drawer in a summer home attic, where it was regularly opened and admired but not handled. The house was prone to break-ins, and we all agreed we did NOT want the sailor stolen or broken! I eventually inherited him. I dream of my Jolly Sailor ending up in a home where he is loved as much as we've loved & enjoyed him!
