Charming vintage porcelain clown figurine. A tramp clown boy dressed in red and white, holding a ball. You may know this, but there are three types of clowns; Auguste, Whiteface, and Tramp. Unlike the mean, foolish, and scary Auguste and the somewhat ignorant and buffoonish Whiteface, Tramps are more representative of real people. People who laugh. People who cry. People who pull themselves up and take another step. Tramps are sometimes called Hobos. The loveable down-on-their-luck, rail riding, bindle carrying clowns show humanity and humility. Charlie Chaplin's "Little Tramp", Red Skelton's "Freddy the Freeloader", and Emmett Kelly's "Weary Willie represent the Tramp like no one before or after them. The world needs more Tramps. Like mine, their attire may appear tattered - this one's style is hastily applied polka dots giving him the appearance of wearing nearly worn through clothing. There is some gold paint wear on his shoes but the wear adds to his vintage and tramp charm. The detailed painting on his face has been well-preserved. Absolute sweetness. What makes this clown unique is the porcelain dipped lace on his collar and cuffs. What makes him very special is the superior condition of the porcelain lace. Lace dipping was a popular technique used in Dresden, Germany made between 1850 and 1914, and experienced a brief revival in the years following WWII. Vintage 1950s, made in Japan.
