A nice piece of rustic redware, this 9-inch plate was hand made in 1985 by Gris Pottery in Dundee, Illinois. In the tradition of antique redware pottery, the surface is sponged in black and yellow and has the word "Welcome" exuberantly handwritten in yellow and underlined a yellow flourish. The coggled edges are a traditional finishing touch.
There is little information about Gris Pottery, which was undoubtedly overshadowed by the famous Haeger Pottery, also located in Dundee. We know that Gris was located there due only to the small clear label on the some of the few pieces available for sale. We've shown a photo of the label, but we emphasize that it is not on this plate.
The plate is hand signed and dated on the back, etched into the clay "Gris 85." It weighs 1 1/2 pounds and is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or other damage and displays just beautifully.
